The Pareto Principle (or, the 80-20 rule)

July 29, 2008

The Pareto Principle, more commonly known as the 80-20 rule, is fairly common and very relevant to the topic of freelance writing. It is this:

80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

So, 80% of your productivity comes from 20% of the work. I would say this is true. Another thing that is basically true is that 20% of the freelancers get 80% of the work. It has been true many times for me also that 20% of the work provides 80% of the money.

So, what’s the point in knowing this?

We need to know this so we can know how to effectively invest our time to maximize its productivity. As you do your work, or your advertising, concentrate and expand on the high value work that really does yield results. A lot of people just love to fiddle around the edges which is why they don’t achieve good results. Don’t be this kind of person! Actively seek to maximise the effectiveness of your time – which is true efficiency.
